About Piñon Peak

Good engineering should reduce friction.

Piñon Peak is a one-person consulting practice based in Bozeman, Montana, run by Evan Locke — built on twenty years of writing software, running infrastructure as code, operating Kubernetes in production, and helping teams ship.

The name comes from the piñon pine: slow-growing, drought-tolerant, and useful — a tree that thrives in hard country by being efficient with what it has. That's the kind of technology this practice builds. Not the flashiest thing. The thing that works, keeps working, and doesn't waste your time.

Most engagements start the same way: a big, tangled problem nobody has had time to take apart. That's the part I'm best at — decomposing it into small, workable pieces, fixing them one at a time, and explaining both the problem and the fix in plain English. I care as much about the person who has to live with the system as I do about the system itself.

The work is technical, but the outcome is human: calmer days, clearer systems, and less of the repetitive work that grinds people down. Whether that's an AI assistant answering routine email for a front office, a Kubernetes platform an engineering team can actually trust, or a delivery pipeline that stops paging people at night — the goal is the same.
